LOOKING FOR A NEW CAREER? NOW IS THE BEST TIME TO JOIN A GENERAL CONTRACTING COMPANY

Career opportunities are endless in B.C.’s construction industry. According to the British Columbia Construction Association’s (BCCA) 2022 BC Construction Annual Survey, construction is the number one employer in B.C.’s goods sector. It makes up over eight percent of the workforce which is more than any other industry in the same category (including forestry, mining, fishing, and agriculture combined). With high demand, construction has experienced a labour shortage, opening major opportunities for those seeking a new career or advancement in the industry. Here’s why you should consider pursuing a career in general contracting.

FUNDING FROM THE CANADIAN GOVERNMENT
In partnership with BCCA, the federal government recently announced over $21 million in funding for new construction industry apprentices. Small to medium-sized construction companies in B.C. that sign up for the program can receive financial support for hiring first-year apprentices in red seal trades. That means more entry-level jobs are opening for students in an industry that’s forecasted to grow close to 10 percent in the next decade. This, combined with apprenticeship programs, makes general contracting a fantastic career path.
GENERAL CONTRACTING PROJECTS ARE BOOMING

In the last five years, the construction industry has experienced a 79 percent increase in the value of current projects. According to BCCA’s annual survey, the estimated value of current major construction projects underway in B.C. is approximately $134 billion. Despite labour shortages and rising costs of supplies, the industry is still projected to have major activity, making it a great option for long-term careers and ultimately, a successful retirement.

BETTER OPPORTUNITIES FOR ADVANCING A CAREER IN GENERAL CONTRACTING

Due to labour shortages, most general contracting businesses are willing to train other industry professionals without a background in construction to take on similar roles within their company. They also tend to offer incentives for furthering your education, growing your skills, or taking on a new position. Whether you prefer to work in the field or in the office, there are various options you can take to advance your career.
