The role:

The Occupational Health & Safety Manager will work closely with the team to enforce health and safety policies and WorkSafe OH&S regulations on all our projects and office(s). The OHS Manager is also responsible for accurate compliance to OH&S legislation, ensuring a safe work environment for all personnel and administering first aid services as required.

Responsibilities include:

  • Create and implement safety policies and procedures tailored to the specific needs and risks of the jobsites. This involves conducting risk assessments and identifying potential hazards.
  • Provide training to employees on safety protocols, including proper use of safety equipment, emergency procedures, and best practices for accident prevention. This might involve organizing workshops, seminars, or regular safety meetings.
  • Inspecting Work Areas regularly to identify potential hazards and ensure compliance with safety regulations. They may also conduct audits to assess the effectiveness of existing safety measures.
  • In the event of accidents or near misses, conduct thorough investigations to determine the root causes and recommend corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
  • Enforce safety standards and regulations and ensure that safety protocols are adhered to and take appropriate disciplinary action when necessary.
  • Oversee the provision and maintenance of safety equipment, such as personal protective equipment (PPE), fire extinguishers, and first aid kits.
  • Develop and implement emergency response plans, including evacuation procedures and crisis management protocols. Coordinate drills to ensure employees are prepared for emergencies.
  • Monitor compliance with safety regulations and recommend improvements to enhance workplace safety.
  • Promote a culture of safety within the organization by raising awareness, encouraging employee involvement in safety initiatives, and recognizing and rewarding safe behavior.
  • Maintain accurate records of safety inspections, incidents, training sessions, and compliance efforts.
  • Administer First Aid to site personnel as required.
  • Perform construction tasks on site – basic carpentry, build and maintain guard rails, general labour etc.

Requirements include:

  • Minimum 5+ years of relevant experience.
  • Valid OFA ticket Level 2 is required; OFA Level 3 is preferred.
  • National Construction Safety Officer Certification or Construction Safety Officer.
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of provincial safety codes and regulations.
  • Experience in residential multifamily and concrete high-rise towers.
  • Fall arrest training and familiar working at heights.
  • Knowledge and ability to comply with all WorkSafe procedures and safety practices, including on-site work practices and guidelines.
  • Excellent communication, organization skills with attention to detail
  • Understanding of the construction process
  • Experience with Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook
  • Ticket for operating machinery such as bobcat/telehandler is an asset.
  • Ability to develop and deliver safety training programs to employees, including new hire orientation and ongoing safety training sessions.
  • Ability to maintain a high level of accuracy and confidentiality concerning employee/contractor files.
  • Strong and effective communication and organizational skills.
  • An ideal candidate will be comfortable working safely in fast paced environments, remain calm under pressure, and will be able to make quick, well-informed decisions as required.
